In this series I move back and forth between self-representation and other subjects, including my mother, my friends -- in particular Tracy, who was nine months pregnant when I photographed her."Dominique Rey: The Bathers," took place 12 September - 4 October 2002 at Gallery One One One. An opening reception happened on Thursday, 12 September 2002 at 3 PM, and the artist gave a lecture about her work on Wednesday, 18 September 2002 at 12 noon.
Dominique Rey's work relates to recent Gallery One One One exhibitions and events about women's sexuality and feminism. An artist's talk by Carolee Schneemann was followed by a Charmaine solo show. Most recently "Bev Pike:The Spinster Project" happened. These events and exhibitions addressed feminist issues of the body from the perspective of three distinct generations of women: Carolee Schneemann, born in 1939, is a performance art pioneer whose sexually provocative work began before the great 1970s wave of feminism; Bev Pike was born in 1956, and identifies herself positively as a "spinster" and a feminist who aligns herself with a group of women at the social margins of contemporary life (the 'body' that interests her is, as she puts it, the 'body politic'); Charmaine, born around 1968, looks to pop icons like Madonna for inspiration. Like Madonna, Charmaine's feminism plays with tropes of pornography and women's sexual power, and the artist goes so far as to abjure the feminist label, believing that the very word "feminist" hinders her attempts at individuation.
Dominique Rey was born in 1976 and makes photographs (and paintings not included in this exhibition) about private female rituals like washing and dressing. The combination of frankness and formal restraint in her photographs falls somewhere, according to curator Cliff Eyland, between Degas and Digital Diaries.
Rey studied at the University of Manitoba and at the Yale summer school. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at Site Gallery and Ace Art in Winnipeg, the Michael Gibson Gallery in London, Ontario and at galerie Sans Nom in Moncton. On two separate occasions, Rey participated in Winnipeg's Mentoring Artists for Women's Art mentorship program with Susan Chafe and Dr. Jennifer Fisher. Last summer her mirror photographs were shown in a solo exhibition at the Franco-Manitoban Centre in St. Boniface, Manitoba. In the past three years, she has received grants from the Manitoba Arts Council, the Winnipeg Arts Council and the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation. Rey is a board member of La Maison des artistes visuels francophones and Ace Art. Her work has recently been discussed in Border Crossings magazine. Her Gallery One One One exhibition was her first solo exhibition at a museum.
