GORDON LEBREDT: BY THE NUMBERS

Gallery One One One
November 10, 2005 - January 27, 2006

A reception happened on Thursday, 10 November, 3:00 - 6:00 pm.
An artist's talk took place on Thursday, 10 November, 4:00 pm.

Gallery One One One held a retrospective exhibition by Canadian artist Gordon Lebredt. Organized by Robert Epp, By the Numbers brought together for the first time Lebredt's early works from the mid- to late seventies. Featured in the exhibition were twenty-one paintings, prints, drawings and three-dimensional constructions, including pieces from Lebredt's student years at the University of Manitoba School of Art (1972-1976).

Designed by Lebredt as a site-specific installation, By the Numbers explored what he calls “the grammaticalization of the visible.” Lebredt's art from the 1970s proposes that images are composed of “discrete 'grammars,' ” a collection of marks that transmit meaning to the viewer, like the diacritical marks that constitute writing. “Without simply dismissing the image, an attempt was made to underscore the various protocols that sustain the work, the work-as-image,” says Lebredt. For the exhibition he reconstructed several works, including one of his rare “reflexive machines”- a mirror-lined steel construction-and two major paintings that have never before been exhibited as originally conceived by the artist.

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Lebredt studied at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Architecture from 1967-1970, before enrolling in the School of Art in 1972. While in art school Lebredt earned a reputation as one of the most advanced thinkers in contemporary art in Manitoba, for his groundbreaking performances at the newly founded Plug In Gallery (1972), and his site-specific installations at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. During this time he also worked extensively with Bill Lobchuk and the Grand Western Canadian Screen Shop in Winnipeg, producing major serigraph prints in collaboration with the legendary Screen Shop. Several significant prints from this collaboration were included in By the Numbers.

Since moving to Toronto in 1981, Lebredt has been the focus of solo exhibitions at YYZ Artist's Outlet, S.L. Simpson Gallery, and the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, and group exhibitions in Regina, Halifax, London, and New York City. Lebredt has curated exhibitions, contributed to numerous art publications, and worked as an art director for several major motion pictures.

Complete photo-documentation of the installation along with essays by Robert Epp, Dr. Jeanne Randolph, and Cliff Eyland are featured on this web site and a CD-ROM publication. Gallery One One One gratefully acknowledges financial assistance for this exhibition from the Manitoba Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts.
