The head would be too big if this were not a painting (at least that's how an artist like Matisse would explain the exaggeration), but as Eyland looks at this picture he thinks of the scientist Wilder Penfield's explanations of how the brain assigns importance to various (of one's own) body parts. Cartoonists put big heads on small bodies in order to make the head the expressive focus of the drawing, and that practice also comes to mind. ![]() |
